Creative Commons (CC) is a non-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative works available for others to build upon legally and to share. The organization has released several copyright licenses known as Creative Commons licenses. Of the c. 2 billion images on Flickr currently 90 million use a Creative Commons licences. Of course this provides the same problem as doing a Google search, finding the most meaningful images for your needs.

Strategies
Use Advanced Search to locate images
Search using Tags and Groups as well as Keywords
Once you have completed a search; check out the three categories, Most Relevant, Most Recent & Most Interesting to re-order the results

Flickr Commons
One of the most interesting developments of 2008 was the decision by the US Library of congress to make over 4000 image from its archive available under a 'commons' licence - No Known Copyright Restrictions - users were encouraged to add comments and notes and tags to the images. This proved of great value not only to the world wide audience who could appreciate and interact with the collection; but the Library itself who gathered missing information from user comments and tags; the detail of this can be found in the first published report of the project which can be downloaded here as a pdf. Since then more Museums and Archives have added treasures and resources to The Commons as the collections on Flickr are now known. The Commons now stands at 22 organisations including The National Galleries of Scotland and The National Media Museum in Bradford from the UK, whilst the Nantuket Historical Association joined this week com. 9 Mar 2009

Much of this content is of significant historical and educational potential and much of it is the public domain. has CC license or is available for educational use. Files are offered in as wide a range of file formats as possible
Understandably; in an archive whose scope is as encompassing there may be copyright IPR issues, possibly from an international perspective thta we may need to discuss in the threads.

Most students will use some form of file sharing to illegally download music and/or films.

Part of the problem is that downloading music through file sharing services is cheaper for students than buying CDs or downloading music through the likes of the iTunes store.

Why not spend 5 minutes introducing your students to Spotify? A free download that gives you totally free access to a vast array of music, including the latest albums, for the cost of 1 short advert every 10 tracks or so. You can also pay 99p per day or £10 per month to get rid of the adverts, but they're really not obtrusive.

You could also try explaining that P2P networks, such as Limewire, BitTorrent, BearShare, et al all rely on connecting directly to other downloaders - which means you can all see each other's IP addresses. And the RIAA/MPAA/etc. have been known to host fake files in order to harvest IP addresses.

The issues in New Zealand could be highlighted here, and a variety of (in)famous lawsuits [references needed]

Copyright is designed to do two things:

To ensure people know what RIGHTS then have to COPY a piece of work
To ensure that the rights content creators are protected

What is covered by copyright?

Pretty much everything 'tangible' - a drawing, a photo, a script, a film, a piece of audio

What isn't covered by copyright?

Facts and things that are 'intangible' - ideas

Nope - copyright is applied automatically to any piece of work. The © logo might be used to highlight the fact that a given piece of work is covered but it is neither necessary nor a guarantee (so if I steal someone else's picture and put "© Me, 2009" that doesn't actually make it mine!).

"Copyright is a form of intellectual property which gives the creator of an original work exclusive rights. Copyright applies to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete. Some jurisdictions also recognize "moral rights" of the creator of a work, such as the right to be credited for the work." for a certain time period in relation to that work, including its publication, distribution and adaptation; after which time the work is said to enter the public domain."

Copyright, IPR and Digital Assets and Resources <in progress>

Copyright is becoming increasingly important issue for all teachers and learners from all sectors and phases in education. Digital tools, digital media, the Internet and especially Web 2.0 create challenges for all in education. Evidence on the forums, lists and conferences suggests that many teachers, (and learners) would like to learn more and be able to use digital resources and services without falling foul of Copyright, IPR and licencing issues.

This wiki was started by Mark Clarkson and Theo Kuechel following an exchange on Twitter and a conversation on the weekly Flashmeeting at Ed Tech Roundup in response to the need for information and dialogue in this, often grey, often complex area. We hope, within a reasonably short time, it will build into a valuable community of practice of benefit to all who visit and engage.

We have created a basic structure for the wiki to suggest a starting point for the sort of issues and examples we will be looking at. We hope that you will contribute to the wiki. Links, case studies, personal examples, resources for teachers and learners; all are welcome. In addition we hope you will use the comments feature and discussion tab to discuss and debate the issues. You can also upload files to the wiki as attachments.

A student at my school was asked by the Head of English to create a series of videos aimed at promoting reading amongst boys.

He created a brilliant James Bond video, complete with white-dot/gunbarrel introduction and theme tune.
